Mike George
Over a period of 34 years working for Manchester City Council until May 2007, Mike has worked in Wythenshawe as a Teacher / Youth Worker, then later in Adult Education at Rackhouse in Northern Moor, the Birtles in Civic Centre and finally at Sharston Learning Centre in Northenden as a Marketing Manager. During those years, he fronted several public events like the Wythenshawe Festival Disco Dancing competitions, numerous fairs and playscheme discos. He's is also in earlier editions of the Guinness Book of Records for marathon piano playing for over 200 hours – a British Record.
He was brought up in Moss Side and spent his youth up to teenager around the Manchester City stadium before his family moved south, living in Cheadle, just around the corner from the Wythenshawe estate.
Mike started at WFM Radio in 2002 and after training on broadcasting and editing equipment he graduated to being Thursday’s evening’s popular Drivetime host on WFM 97.2.
His taste in music is varied: 60s, 70s, blues, pop, and other popular music. He thrives on having studio or telephone guests, and has given a number of new unsigned bands their first opportunity for broadcasting their music live - including Brothers with Different Mothers, El Quinell and Karma. He has created two characters on his show - Rory on the Roof (weather reports) and Mobile Malcolm (traffic reporter). He now has award winner Darryl Morris from Bolton on his Thursday Drivetime, giving up–to-date TV gossip on soaps and other popular shows.
Mike hopes that in his shows he caters for those listeners who like a mixture of music, chat, competitions, news and special guests. He likes to have well known celebrity people on his show – the latest being Dr Chris Steele and 13 year-old Olympic hopeful Tom Daley, the diver from Portsmouth who will feature at the Beijing Olympics and later the London 2012 event. Benchill born brothers Anthony and Chris Donnelly of Gio-Goi fame popped into the studios at the end of 2007 and on Mike’s 2008 ‘wish list’ are Jason Orange, George Michael, Ruth Badger, and Amir Khan when he is World Champion – so listen to his space!
Mike enthuses, "Keep listening - it's doing me (and you) a power of good!"
