On the Beat
with Mark Flanagan and Roger Burton
Think crime prevention and your first thoughts probably don't
turn to your local radio station.. but in Wythenshawe that's
exactly what's happening.
GMP Crime Reduction Advisors, Mark Flanagan and Roger Burton
are the new crime-busting DJs on Wythenshawe FMs pioneering
weekly show 'On The Beat'.
Say's Mark: Roger and I were spending so much time being interviewed
for various shows on the subject of crime prevention that
Wythenshawe FM said "why don't you have your own show?".
I must admit, at first I thought they were joking but the
more we thought about it the better the idea seemed. It is
a perfect way of communication important messages on crime
and it is also a lot of fun!'
Naturally
Mark & Roger had to learn the ropes quickly and undertook
a crash course in a range of radio skills, not to mention
learning the Station's policy and procedures. After 6 weeks
of hard work however, they were ready to 'go live' and 'On
The Beat' was born. Now the show, which is on air every Tuesday
from 2-3pm, mixes the serious issues of crime and disorder
with a variety of music for the whole community, including
some of Mark and Roger's own personal favorites. Says Mark:'
it's great because I get to play all the songs I like, although
Roger is not always keen on my choices. Last week I played
'Hooray It's a Cheeky Holiday'. by The Cheeky Girls, which
is surely a criminal record if there ever was one?
The Station not only provides a platform for voices which
wouldn't usually get the opportunity to be heard on radio,
but also provides Roger and Mark with the chance to spread
the word, inform residents and importantly entertain their
li8steners!
'Each week is different 'adds Roger. We try to entice guests
from different police departments or other partner agencies
to impart their knowledge on a variety of subjects. Generally
when approached, prospective guests are a bit skeptical but
soon overcome their fears, as we did'
'On The Beat' goes out every Tuesday between 2-3pm. The Presenters
are always looking for new angles, so if you have something
you feel may need airing, please give either Mark or Roger
a call on 0161 499 7982.
Wythenshawe FM is on 97.2FM.
The Station is especially committed to people who are traditionally
denied media access. Anyone interested in broadcasting but
who lacks professional; skills is encouraged to participate.
