No to Wythenshawe Park Life Concerts

Thousands of music fans will once again flock to Platt Fields Park for this year’s Parklife Weekender festival after plans to move the event were dropped.

Rapper Dizzee Rascal and veteran rockers The Flaming Lips will headline the two-day festival, which aims to be the biggest in its three-year history. It is understood organisers have extended the festival’s capacity by 10,000 tickets to meet demand, with 50,000 people expected to attend over the two days.

Council chiefs had explored potentially doubling the size of the event by holding it at Wythenshawe Park to further boost town-hall coffers, after the event made £60,000 last year. But in the wake of a  heated consultation process with local residents, the council has decided notto press ahead with plans to move this year’s event as it seeks to obtain a licence to hold outdoor ‘super-concerts’ at the park. Coun Mike Amesbury, executive member for culture and leisure, said: “The organisers of the Parklife Festival had expressed an interest in moving to Wythenshawe Park, but it was always made clear that this was subject to the park being granted a licence to hold large concerts, following a public consultation. “Our officers are now considering the responses to that consultation before the matter goes before a committee, and so it wouldn’t have been appropriate to move this summer’s festival to Wythenshawe as we wouldn’t have had sufficient time to properly plan such a large event. Instead, the event will be held in Platt FieldsPark and we will be working closely with our partners in the police and, of course, local residents to make sure the event is a success – and any issues such as noise, parkmaintenance, litter, and parking will be dealt with effectively.” The Parklife Weekender is on June 9 and 10 with standard tickets priced at £59.95 for the weekend and £37.50 for a day, plus booking fees. » For the full line-up and more information visit www.parklife.uk.com More news

On a rare afternoon off from guarding the Dark Side, the Stormtroopers surprised cinemagoers at Apollo Cinemas Altrincham as they were invited to experience the epic Star Wars tale in 3D for the first time. While a couple of the Stormtroopers struggled to fit the 3D glasses over their white helmets, all of them happily munched on the bags of popcorn provided for them!

The first chapter of the Star Wars saga follows Anakin Skywalker’s journey as he pursues his dreams and confronts his deepest fears in the midst of a galaxy in turmoil.  Fans of the franchise will be able to relive the dramatic podrace scene and Obi Wan Kenobi’s epic battle with Darth Maul as never before.

Nick McKiernan, General Manger of Apollo Cinemas, Altrincham said: “We’ve had cinemagoers visit us from all over the world, but never before from outerspace! The Star Wars film franchise is one of the greatest of all time, so to be able to share it with our customers in glorious 3D is an absolute honour.”

RECLAIM PROJECT – INSPIRATION AND ASPIRATION

A charity called Reclaim has been running an ambitious mentoring scheme

which is giving confidence and inspiration to Wythenshawe girls.

The charity, set up in 2007, launched its first scheme in Wythenshawe last October and since then around 25 local girls have been taking part in a  project where they are paired with a volunteer mentor from their area and  take part in a variety of activities.

In a recent interview with WFM, Reclaim Project Coordinator Emma Horridge told us how the girls were enjoying a range of confidence-boosting and fun activities including a taking part in community work, a fashion show and a dance workshop and how they had learned to write their own poems and songs and had even written a manifesto affirming their values. You can see their eight-point manifesto here.
