To celebrate Compost Awareness Week 2012, residents of Greater Manchester who get involved in composting at home between 6th and 12th May are being offered the chance to win a compost bin and £100 of garden centre vouchers to spend on their garden.

There’s a lot going on in Greater Manchester to help you compost at home, including a FREE beginners and family fun class to composting at Debdale Eco Centre on Saturday 12th May. To book your free place call 0161 770 1712 (Mon – Fri 9-5) or email

As well as composting road shows, offering advice for all of those wanting to compost at home, there is also an easy-to-follow online guide on how to compost which you can view on

Everyone who visits the classes, road shows or the Recycle for Greater Manchester website will be entered into the prize draw.

You may have a food and garden waste collection at home but composting means that you will reap the rewards of turning your waste into nutritious and environmentally- friendly compost, say the organisers.

Helen Dodd, Coordinator at Debdale Eco Centre, said: “Home composting is a simple and cheap way of dealing with up to a third of a typical family’s waste bin.  Compost made at home can help the planet, keep our gardens in bloom and even our vegetables growing.”

In the past celebrities such as Helen Mirren, Phillippa Forrester and Chris Evans have added their active support to the campaign to compost at home.

Since the launch of the home composting buy-a-bin scheme in 2010, over 2014 compost bins have been bought in Greater Manchester. The organisers of the scheme want to increase that number. To buy a bin for as little as £14, call 0845 1306 090 or visit for details of where compost bins are available to residents across Greater Manchester. Alternatively compost bins are available to buy at most garden centres or DIY stores.
