South West Coast Path Through-Hike for Aortic Dissection

In a remarkable demonstration of resilience and determination, Martin Hilton, an aortic dissection survivor and now an aortic athlete, along with his wife Fiona, will embark on a challenging through-hike of the South West Coast Path. Starting in Minehead in August, the couple will walk over 47 consecutive days, concluding their journey in Poole in late September. This adventure marks a personal triumph and also serves to raise awareness and funds for aortic dissection research and support.

Martin's journey to this point has been extraordinary. In March 2020, while out running, he experienced an aortic dissection. Thanks to an observant consultant and lifesaving surgery, Martin survived and has since embraced new challenges. Always active, Martin's recovery has seen him return to an impressive level of fitness, culminating in his latest undertaking: walking the entire length of the South West Coast Path.

The South West Coast Path is England's longest waymarked long-distance trail, stretching 630 miles (1,014 km) from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset. The path offers stunning views, passing through quaint fishing villages, dramatic clifftops and some of the best beaches in England. This demanding trail is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest nearly four times, making it a fitting challenge for Martin and Fiona.

Martin’s story is a testament to the importance of early diagnosis and effective treatment of aortic dissection. Reflecting on his experience, Martin recalls the surreal moment when he was told he had not suffered a heart attack, but something more severe. The subsequent surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital, performed by the skilled Mr Mehta and his team, was a success. Since then, Martin has focused on his recovery with the same dedication he applied to his fitness before the dissection.

As Martin and Fiona prepare for their through-hike, they aim to highlight the critical work of the Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust. Their goal is to raise funds to support research and increase awareness of this often misunderstood condition. The funds will help improve diagnosis and treatment, ultimately saving lives.

Aortic Dissection is a progressive tear in the inner lining of the aorta, the main artery of the body, which blood surges through creating a new channel between the layers. This can rupture or interrupt the blood supply to vital organs. It is a time-critical medical emergency. https://aorticdissectioncharitabletrust.org/about-aortic-dissection/
