The choir of 20 had been rehearsing tirelessly ahead of its performance of Sing, Gary’s official Diamond Jubilee song.
Their music teacher Daniel Hodsdon said: “It’s amazing to have been asked. It’s the highlight of my teaching career to date. When I told the choir they were so excited, completely over the moon – a lot of the girls cried.
“The 20 selected were those who had shown the most co
mmitment to extra-curricular activities like singing at masses, hospitals and care homes.
“None of us have met him before so it’s great.”
The pupils, aged 11 to 16, headed to the arena on Monday afternoon for a rehearsal with their idol before the performance. Mr Hodsdon added: “We’ve been practising very hard for over a month. It’s going to be great.”
Headteacher Fiona Minshall said: “Truthfully, we can’t really understand how we’ve got in this position – we are very humble.
“It’s fabulous for Wythenshawe a
s well. We have really risen to the occasion and we are utterly delighted.
“When you consider how many schools are in Manchester, it’s fantastic.”
