The Manchester Christmas Light Switch-on, in association with Key 103, has become the beginning of Christmas for generations of Manchester people, and this year was no exception.

The city centre squares became Britain’s biggest pop venue for the night as thousands of people watched the spectacular show live in Albert Square and via live web streams beamed across the world.

Mancunian funny man, Jason Manford, delighted the crowds with his individual brand of comedy, keeping the huge crowds laughing along before pushing the button on this year’s Christmas lights.

Live performances from Britain’s Got Talent winners and chart toppers Collabro, crowd favourite Shane Ward thrilled the crowds with their spirited performances, with brand new starlets The Piccadillys readying the crowds beautifully.

Star of the hit stage show Shrek the Musical brought a much loved swamp-ogre chic to the stage – a tour de force in theatrical makeup – and the stars of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, including Hollywood star Warwick Davies, we given a warm reception from the excitable crowd.

CBBC’s own Hacker and Dodge, along with presenter Katie Thistleton, brought a manic, and raucously cheeky appearance – always a memorable part of any live show!

The night was opened and pulses set racing by the choreography of the Printwork’s Street Dance competition winners, Superkidz.

The event concluded with 10-minute fireworks spectacular.

Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester Christmas spokesperson, said: “What an incredible night! It felt like the whole of Manchester had come down to Albert Square – thousands of people and of all ages – to help us welcome in Christmas 2014. All the acts were fantastic and the crowd has been brilliant.

“For generations of Mancunians, the lights switch-on has become a last tradition and has become the official start to Christmas for Manchester families who love to join the fun, enjoy the show and look forward to the festive season.

“But this is only the beginning as Manchester will be transformed next week when the world-famous, award-winning Christmas Markets return next Friday!”

Manchester’s award winning Christmas Markets will open officially to the public next week on Friday 14 November, spreading across 9 sites in the city centre with more than 300 stalls.

The Markets are the UK’s ORIGINAL, BIGGEST and BEST!
