A REVIEW BY TRÉTRÉ THE BALLAD OF JOHNNY AND JUNE The Johnny Cash Musical 2026, LYRIC Theatre, The Lowry. 9th June - 13th June 2026
When I entered the venue, I couldn't help but notice the throng of visitors of a certain age demographic. Obviously they were long time loyal fans of Johnny Cash. They were visibly and verbally excited about the performance of THE BALLAD OF JOHNNY AND JUNE. The new musical that was shown in the main Lyric Theatre.
All I can say is, it was SUPERB! The acting, singing and the American Southern accents were on point. The live band on stage made all the difference. Country and Western fans will adore this production.
This was a story based on the lives, trials and tribulations of Johnny Cash and June Carter. This story was told through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash played by Ryan O'Donnell. Often turbulent, often chaotic, but a true love story nonetheless. Infact, it was the most famous love story in American musical history, lasting a lifetime.. right up until June's death, on May 15th 2003, at the age of 73. She passed away in Nashville, Tennessee. 4 months later, Johnny joined his true love.
Christopher Ryan Grant who played Johnny Cash was astonishing. He mimicked him perfectly. Christina Bianco played June, and she was the perfect pick for this part. Every song was covered much to the delight of the audience. A toe tapping musical extravaganza.
If you get a chance to go see this production, GO!! Even if you're not a fan. It's fantastic. Worthy of the standing ovation it received....Joyous ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
