GENTLEMAN JACK performed by the NORTHERN BALLET. WORLD PREMIERE 2026 LOWRY THEATRE REVIEW BY TRÉTRÉ
A truly awesome ballet performance — a story of determination, forbidden love, and sheer will. Not a classic rehashed or reimagined, but an entirely new show. After a successful drama series and years in the making, a beautifully elegant ballet emerged. A world premiere. Exquisitely performed, intricate yet bold, gripping yet delicate, sensual yet demanding. Gentleman Jack did not disappoint.
The stage design was ingenious. The dancers moved bookcases fitted with film screens that showed sky filled clouds, singing birds and dreary weather, while the clever use of a treadmill allowed the dancer playing Anne Lister, to walk as if she was in the English countryside, the screens changed when depicting her eye opening travels abroad. Creativity was abundant! It was cleverly intertwined throughout the performance.Erratic writing flickered across those screens, echoing her coded diaries, while an ensemble of dancers surrounded her in costumes emblazoned with more of her secret coded messages.
A large cast of amazing, talented dancers, who didn't fail to keep the audience mesmerized. This was contemporary ballet at its most glorious .Poignantly profound. Sensually performed. Bravo!!
Elegant. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
