SMOKE - Written and Performed by ALEXIS GREGORY, 21st May 2026, Ominibus Theatre, The Lowry - Review by TRÉTRÉ
Expanding one’s experiences can be nerve‑wracking for some and exhilarating for others. For me, stepping into the Lowry’s Omnibus Theatre to review a one‑man show felt like crossing a threshold — a new venture, full of uncertainty, anticipation, and that delicious edge of the unknown.
Part of an LGBTQ+ tour across theatres and festivals, the hour‑long performance didn’t just make an impression — it carved itself into the room. The story followed a gay man grieving the loss of his partner, only to receive an Instagram message from him two years after his death. From that moment, the narrative spiralled into grief, fury, drug addiction, and a haunting descent into psychosis, exposing the fractures it created within him and the shockwaves it sent through the people around him.
It was riveting. It was raw. It was humour sharpened by pain and storytelling stripped down to its most vulnerable core. Alexis Gregory didn’t just perform this one‑man show — he inhabited it, with realism, passion, and a fierce emotional honesty. He held the audience in the palm of his hand.
Exceptional. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
