Tragedy reminds us to think about winter dangers to dogs
In a tragic accident on 4th January 2026, a dog became trapped under the ice of a Wythenshawe pond and following a lengthy emergency response it's body was recovered.
The incident at Painswick Park, saw specialist Fire & Rescue Officers and a Water Response Unit in attendance for much of the afternoon after the alarm was raised at lunchtime. Despite best efforts it was not possible to save the dog.
WFM News Hive presenter Ben Cooper has been speaking to Ryan Neile of the pet rescue and protection charity Blue Cross, about ways we can try to keep our dogs safe in the winter conditions.
Ryan tell us why dogs may do dangerous things around icy ponds and waterways, and why it is sometimes hard to stop them, plus offers some useful tips to protect them.
